Besides, there are 50 Tiger Reserves (71,027.10 km2), 16 Elephant Reserves, 26 Ramsar Wetland Sites (12,119.03 km2), 7 World Heritage Sites and 1 Mixed World Heritage Site in India. India has a rich heritage of species and genetic strains of flora. Overall about six percent of world species are found in India. It is estimated that India is one of the seventeen mega-diversity (eleventh among these in respect to number of endemic vascular plant species*) and tenth among the plant-rich countries of the world as well as sixth among the centres of diversity and origin of agro-diversity. Out of the total 35 biodiversity hotspots in the world, India has four namely Himalaya, Indo-Burma (parts of northeast India and Andaman Islands), Western Ghats (and Sri Lanka), and Sundaland (Nicobar Islands) (www.biodiversityhotspots.org). The growing urbanization and industrialization causes the decrease of natural habitats, which further results in the loss to biological diversity. Biodiversity, once lost cannot be recovered.
