REPORT OF ‘WORLD EARTH DAY’ 2024
EIACP PC-RP (Environmental Information, Awareness Capacity Building and Livelihood Programme, Programme Centre- Resource Partner) on Biodiversity (Flora), and Central National Herbarium, Botanical Survey of India (BSI) were celebrated the ‘World Earth Day 2024’ at Haripal Gurudayal Institution, Haripal, Hooghly on 22nd April 2024. In this awareness campaign the team of scientists and staff of CNH & EIACP PC RP, BSI were present. Drawing and quiz competitions were also organised in this occasion. The global theme for Earth Day of 2024 was 'Planet vs. Plastics', which recognizes the threat plastics pose to human health and with campaigners demanding a 60% reduction in the production of plastics by 2040.
The programme started with an inaugural speech by Dr. R.K. Gupta, Scientist ‘E’ & HoO, CNH, BSI in the presence of Sri Priya Ranjan Ghatak, Headmaster, Haripal Gurudayal Institution, Haripal, Hooghly. During his speech Dr. Gupta highlighted the significance of Earth Day as a critical reminder of our shared duty towards nurturing and safeguarding planet Earth. The team of scientists led an awareness campaign that educated students and staff about the importance of biodiversity and ecological balance. In the drawing competition over 80 students of different classes showcased their creativity and concern for the environment through their art on the theme "Planet Vs. Plastics". This competition was neatly divided into two categories viz. Category 1 of classes 5 to 8 and Category 2 of classes 9 to 12. From Category 1, Hiran Maji, Mounish Ghosh, and Bidipto Das secured first, second, and third positions and similarly, Dipam Das, Rupam Das and Shankarnath Dey secured first, second, and third positions from Category 2, respectively. In the quiz competition, the team comprising Aditya Dari and Hriju Das clinched the first position in the class 5-8 category and in the second category for classes 9 to 12, the duo team of Spandan Bhar and Ritam Khamrui secured the first position. On this occasion, BSI & EIACP PC-RP officials Sanjay Kumar, Arka Banerjee, Ms. Shabnam Bandyopadhyay, Subrato Rudra, Somenath Nandi and Dineshwar Kumar Shah coordinated the event, while all teachers, including Sourav Pal, Sougata Bhattacharya, and Asit Kumar Panda, remained present.
At the end, Sri Ghatak, Headmaster, Haripal Gurudayal Institution, extended his heartfelt gratitude to the CNH & EIACP PC-RP, Botanical Survey of India for selecting this school as a venue for observing Earth Day. The Haripal school administration and teachers commended the Botanical Survey of India (BSI) officials for their commitment to observing Earth Day at Haripal.
