Report on two days Workshop on
‘Plants Identification and Herbarium Methodology (Flowering & Non-flowering Plants)’
A two days’ Workshop on ‘Plants Identification and Herbarium Methodology (Flowering & Non-flowering Plants)’ wasorganised jointly by the EIACP Programme Centre-Resource Partner on Biodiversity (Flora), Botanical Survey of India and Central National Herbarium, Howrah on 9th to 10th March 2024 at CNH Auditorium, B. Garden, Howrah. In this workshop Dr. A.A. Mao, Director, BSI inaugurated the newly renovated EIACP PC RP room in presence of Dr. R.K. Gupta, Scientist ‘E’ & HOO, CNH & Dr. J.S. Jalal, Scientist ‘E’ & In-charge, BSI EIACP PC RP, BSI on 09.03.2024. After the inauguration of renovated EIACP room two new pamphlets viz., ‘Medicinal Plants Diversity in Arunachal Pradesh’ and ‘The Lantern Flowers of India: Genus Ceropegia L.’ was inaugurated by Director, BSI in presence of scientists of BSI and students. The workshop programme was inaugurated Dr. R.K. Gupta & Dr. J.S. Jalal, Botanical Survey of India. Total 60 PG students of Bethune College, Lady Brabourne College, Bidhannagar College and Jogamaya Devi College of Kolkata participated in this programme.
The workshop spearheaded by a team of distinguished Scientists, PDF and Research Scholars of Botanical Survey of India. After the immediate tea break the theoretical session was started. Dr. U. Elaya Perumal, PDF, BSI, delivered a lecture on ‘Identification of Algae in India’, Dr. Hembrom, Scientist ‘C’, BSI led the sessions on the ‘Identification of Macrofungi (Mushrooms) and Dr. Shashi Kumar, PDF, BSI provided lecture on ‘Identification of Bryophytes’ very lucidly in front of the participants. After the lunch the practical session was begin in three (3) groups of 20 students each. Dr. Sudeshna Dutta, Botanist, BSI took the practical class on Macrofungi, Ms. Meghna Paul demonstrates the bryophytes practical and Dr. Perumal took practical on algae.
On the 2nd Day i.e.10.03.2024 the programme started with a visit of AJC Bose Indian Botanic Garden leaded by Dr. Ravi Prasad, Botanist, BSI, Mrs. Titir Saha, Bot. Assistant, AJCBIBG, BSI & Dr. Shyam Biswa, Bot. Asst., CNH, BSI. This visit around AJCBIBG was highly appreciated by the participants. After the tea break the session started with Herbarium Methodology and Identification of Angiospermic Plants by Dr. Biswa and Mrs. Ruma Bhadra, Sr. Preservation Asst. BSI. After the lunch an interesting lecture on Plant Nomenclature delivered by Dr. Avishek Bhattacharjee. The students thoroughly enjoyed this session. After this lecture students divided in two groups for visiting Digital Herbarium and Molecular Laboratory by Arka Banerjee and Dr. Ranjith Layola, M.R., respectively.
During the valedictory function, Dr. C. Murugan, Scientist ‘F’, Hqrs., BSI delivered a brief lecture about the workshop. One student of each colleges of Bethune College, Lady Brabourne College, Bidhannagar College and Jogamaya Devi College of Kolkata give his/her feedback about the workshop. Dr. Murugan, Dr. Gupta and Dr. Jalal, awarded the certificates to the participants. The workshop was concluded with vote of thanks by Dr. Gupta. The programme ended with National Anthem and a group photo is also taken.
