Report of Two Days Conference at Kalyani University

 

Two Day National Conference on “Addressing Challenges and Showing Resilience Against Climate Change in Eastern Region of India” jointly organized by DESKU EIACP PC-RP, Kalyani University (KU), BSI EIACP PC-RP, Howrah, ZSI EIACP PC-RP, Kolkata, TERI EIACP PC-RP, New Delhi, Dept. of Economics, KU and Dept. of Zoology, KU at APJ Abdul Kalam Auditorium, Kalyani University, Nadia, West Bengal sponsored by MoEF&CC, Govt. of India, New Delhi on 29th-30th May 2025. On 29th May 2025 the Conference started by an awareness rally on Climate Change under Mission LiFE in the morning. A total 250 students and participants took part in the rally. In the inaugural session Ms. Nameeta Prasad, Joint Secretary, MoEF&CC, Govt. of India, New Delhi, Mr. Kamalakanth, P., APCCF, Govt. of West Bengal, Dr. Kalyan Rudra, Chairman, West Bengal Pollution Control Board, Govt. of West Bengal, Prof. (Dr.) Kallol Paul, Vice-Chancellor, KU., Mr. Abhishek Acharya, Director, MoEF&CC, New Delhi, Ms. Lipika Roy, Deputy Director, Economic Division, MoEF&CC, New Delhi and Mr. Rahul Bhatia, Research Officer, EIACP Cell, MoEF&CC, New Delhi delivered their inaugural addresses. In the inaugural programme two book viz., ‘Wild and uncultivated leafy vegetables of West Bengal: Diversity, Nutritional value and Traditional Uses’ and ‘Conference Abstract Volume’ were released by the dignitaries. After the inaugural session a key note address was delivered by Dr. Rudra on ‘Living with Century-Scale Climate Change in West Bengal’. After the key note address two plenary lectures were delivered by Dr. Basanta Kumar Das, Director, CIFRI-ICAR, Barrackpore, Kolkata on ‘Effect of Climate Change on Aquaculture’ and Prof. Susanta Kumar Chakraborty, Former Vice-Chancellor, Vidyasagar University, Paschim Medinipur on ‘Impact of Climate change on Biodiversity Loss and Ecosystem Degradation’. After the lunch break Ms. Nameeta Prasad, Joint Secretary, MoEF&CC visited the Herbal Garden of Kalyani University and DESKU EIACP Centre. Following that she inaugurated the exhibition stall in the Administrative Building Corridor of Kalyani University. The third plenary lecture was delivered by Dr. Tirtha Kumar Datta, Vice-Chancellor, West Bengal University of Animal & Fishery on ‘Climate Change and its impact on animal health’. After the plenary lectures a plenary discussion on ‘Climate Finance and its perspective’ by Mr. Abhishek Acharya, Prof. Saikat Maitra, IIM, Kolkata, Prof. Byasdeb Dasgupta, Director, IDSK, Mr. Tirthakar Mondal, WRI and Dr. Pradyut Pyne, Assistant Director, Ministry of Finance, Govt. of India. In the Vidyasagar Hall and in JCB Hall the participants present their Oral presentation. Total 45 Oral presentations were presented. In the Administrative building Corridor the participants present their poster. Total 68 posters were presented. In the APC Hall the students of different school present their Science Model on Climate Action. In the Science Model competition the total Models were 21 and participants were 46. The first day programme was ended by a beautiful cultural programme by the School and University students directed by Nrityangan, Belgharia. On the 30th May 2025 the programme started by a plantation programme under ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ in DESKU EIACP garden by the dignitaries. After the plantation programme three plenary lectures were delivered by Prof. Kousik Pramanick, Integrative Biology Research Unit, Dept. of Life Sciences, Presidency University on ‘Climate change and its impact on Human Health’, Prof. Koushik Ghosh, Dept. of Zoology, The University of Burdwan on ‘Effect of Climate Change on Aquaculture and Food Security’ and lastly Prof. (Dr.) Ashis Kumar Panigrahi, Dept. of Zoology, Kalyani University. After the lunch the prizes were distributed to the winners of Oral & Poster Presentations and Science Model Competition by the dignitaries. The programme concluded with Valedictory address by Mr. Rahul Bhatia. A group photo was also taken. A total of 1200 participant was participated in the two days National Conference.
