Three Days Pilot Capacity Building Training Programme for Biodiversity Management Committees of Uttarakhand
 

Three days pilot capacity building training programme for Biodiversity Management Committee (BMC) was organized by Botanical Survey of India, NRC, Dehradun & Uttarakhand Biodiversity Board, Dehradun at Hotel Lalit Palace, Kishan Nagar Chowk, Chakrata Rd., Dehradun from 5th-7th March 2025. Dr. S.K. Singh, Scientist- F & HoO, BSI, NRC, Dehradun gives the welcome address emphasized the vital role of the Botanical Survey of India (BSI) in his introduction, highlighting direct and indirect benefits from plants in our daily lives. Dr. Gaurav Sharma, Scientist- F & HoO, ZSI, NRC, Dehradun delivered an insightful lecture on bio diversity and the role of ZSI in its conservation. Shri Nitish Mani Tripathi IFS, Member-Secretary, Uttarakhand Biodiversity Board, Dehradun thanked the participants to take part in the training program. He gave a short introduction about BMC and the problems they are facing. Then he briefed about PBR and the process to fill it up. Hindi version of course material (Training Module for Pilot Capacity Building Programme for the BMCs) was released by the dignitaries. Dr. Manish Kandwal, Scientist E, BSI-NRC, Dehradun welcomed all the participants and emphasized the different subjects in the course and stated that he expects the course to be beneficial for all the participants and they should take the biodiversity lesson to the ground. All 47 participants gave a brief introduction about themselves, sharing their names, occupations, places of origin, and expectations from the workshop. All the BMCs members who participated in the training were from varied backgrounds like farmers, salaried employees, local businessmen, retired government servants, etc. the participants represented the remote tribal belt of Uttarakhand, covering areas such as Badrinath, Chakrata, Joshimath, Mana, Niti, Haridwar, Tuni, Bhagwani etc. The participants requested to organize similar workshops in their native place in the future, highlighting the need for community-based initiatives. Dr. Sameer Patil, Botanist, NRC, Dehradun started his lecture with the importance of wild plants that are not cultivated generally but have potential in agriculture. Shri S.S. Rasaily, IFS Retd. APCCF, Ex-Member Secretary, Uttarakhand Biodiversity Board explained how Biodiversity Management Committee (BMC) is formed. Topic on Documentation & importance of People's Biodiversity Register was given by Dr. Rakesh Shah, IFS Retd. PCCF, Ex- Chairperson, Uttarakhand Biodiversity Board. Dr. Amit, Research Officer, Uttarakhand Biodiversity Board gives a lecture on PRI and its main objectives. Dr. Arti Garg, Scientist E, NRC, Dehradun started her talk by explaining how our biodiversity came into existence. In this relation she stated that in lab new types of genetic variation can be made through genetic engineering but in nature this process is done by bees. A lecture on Bamboos and their economic and cultural role for BMC in Uttarakhand villages was given by Dr. H.B. Naithani (Retd. Scientist), ICFRE, Dehradun. Ms. Riya Jain, BSIP IV Cycle Intern, National Biodiversity Authority presented her talk in form of a Q&A session with the participants by summarizing the contents of the entire seminar in her presentation. She explained the types of biodiversity, like ecosystem biodiversity, species biodiversity and genetic biodiversity. In Panel discussion participants cleared their confusions related to the course. They said that they learned a lot of things in the workshop, enjoyed the training program very much and assured that they will implement the knowledge gathered in their community. They also hope that such programs will be organized frequently in the future. After that certificate was distributed among the BMC members.
