Workshop at Ramananda College, Bishnupur

 

Report on workshop on ‘Identification and Nomenclature of Plants including Lower Groups (Algae, Fungi & Bryophyte)’
 
A two days’ workshop on ‘Identification and Nomenclature of Plants including Lower Groups (Algae, Fungi & Bryophyte)’ wasorganised by Environmental Awareness Capacity Building & Livelihood Programme (EIACP) Programme Centre (PC) – Resource Partner (RP), Botanical Survey of India and Central National Herbarium, BSI, Howrah in collaboration with Ramananda College, Bishnupur, Bankura at Department of Botany, Ramananda College, Bishnupur on 5th & 6th October 2023. The workshop started on 5th October, 2023 at 10 a.m. with an inaugural ceremony by an inaugural song followed by lightning of the lamp and watering of the plant. The inaugural session began with a welcoming address by Dr. Swapna Ghorai, Principal, Ramananda College, Bishnupur and followed by a key note address by Dr. Jeewan Singh Jalal, Scientist ‘E’, Hqrs., BSI & Project Coordinator, BSI EIACP PC RP. The resource persons of the workshop were Dr. Kanad Das, Scientist ‘F’, CNH, BSI, Dr. Jeewan Singh Jalal, Scientist ‘E’, Hqrs., BSI & Project Coordinator, BSI EIACP PC RP, Dr. Devendra Singh, Scientist ‘E’ & HoO, AJCB Indian Botanic Garden, Howrah, Dr. Gopal Krishna, Scientist ‘C’, Hqrs., BSI, Dr. Shyam Biswas, Bot. Assistant, CNH, BSI, Ms. Ruma Bhadra, Senior Preservation Assistant, CNH, BSI, Dr. U. Elaya Perumal, RA, BSI, Dr. Shashi Kumar, RA, BSI and Dr. Animesh Maji, ex-RA, BSI. A total of 79 participants attended the workshop. Thirty nine UG and PG students of Ramananda College, 8 UG students of Bankura Christian College, 8 UG students of Bankura Sammilani College, six UG students of Sonamukhi College, 7 Ph. D. Scholars of Bankura University and rest of 11 were Assistant Professor and Lecturer from different colleges. After the inaugural session, the technical session was started with a lecture of Dr. Gopal Krishna about Plant Identification (angiosperm) and Mrs. Ruma Bhadra about angiospermic family Poaceae in detail. These informative lectures were really beneficial to all participants. Dr. Jalal delivered a very interesting topic lecture, ‘The Orchid Diversity in West Bengal’. The students thoroughly enjoy the lecture. The post lunch session was presided by the practical session of identification of plants was carried out by Dr. Biswa, Dr. Maji and Mrs. Bhadra. In this session the special emphasis was given to the families Acanthaceae, Asteraceae, Amaranthaceae, Asclepiadaceae, Cyperaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Mimosaceae, Poaceae, Solanaceae, Scrophulariaceae and Verbenaceae. This practical session was immense helpful to the participants. The first day programme was concluded with a beautiful lecture on ‘Typification of Plant Names’ by Dr. Krishna. After the technical session, a test was carried out to get feedback from the students on the first day workshop learning. Following this session, a brief Mission LiFE programme was presented, and a group photo was taken. 
On 2nd day Dr. Das and Dr. Ghosh delivered an interesting topic on ‘Identification of Macro Fungi including Morphotaxonomy and Molecular Phylogeny’ and followed by the practical demonstration. Participants were highly satisfied by their presentations. Dr. Perumal delivered both theoretical and practical knowledge on the topic ‘Identification of Algae’ highlighting ‘The Algal Bioresources of India’. It was really very interesting to all the participants. After the lunch, Dr. Devendra Singh and Dr. Shashi Kumar presented theory as well as practical lesson on ‘Identification of Bryophytes’ very lucidly in front of the participants. On both the day the students actively interacted with the resource persons during the presentations.
During two days workshops all the participants were involved sincerely. This programme was great for brainstorming, interactive learning, building relationships and problem solving. Workshops were carried out with immaculate management and patience.

During the valedictory function, Dr. Jalal, Dr. D. Singh and faculty members of Ramananda College awarded the certificates to the participants. On behalf of Department, Dr. Swapna Ghorai, Principal, Ramananda College, Bishnupur and Dr. Shymal Kanti Mallick, Dr. Ajit Kumar Datta, Dr. Asish Mandal, Dr. Sabyasachi Chatterjee, Dr. Saubashya Sur, Mr. Sanju Dutta, Mr. Soumen Mahanta, Dr. Rebeca Ghanta and scholars and students of Dept. of Botany, Ramananda College extends hands of collaboration to all to utilise the available facilities for this two-days workshop. Dr. Ghanta expressed her sense of gratitude to Dr. J.S. Jalal as well as all the resource persons for their time and incredibly good talk on the various topics and the entire team members of BSI EIACP PC-RP for successfully organising the two days workshop. The workshop was concluded with vote of thanks by Dr. Ghanta.
