Report on workshop on Identification & Nomenclature of Plants including Lower Groups
(Algae, Fungi, Bryophyte & Angiosperm)
at
Dept. of Botany, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Government College, Newtown
 
A Two-days workshop on ‘Identification & Nomenclature of Plants including Lower Groups (Algae, Fungi, Bryophyte & Angiosperm)’ was organised by Department of Botany, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Government College, Newtown, Kolkata- 700 156 in collaboration with Central National Herbarium & ENVIS Resource Partner on Biodiversity (Flora), Botanical Survey of India (Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Government of India, New Delhi) on 6th & 7th September, 2022. The resource persons for the workshop were Dr. K. Karthigeyan, Scientist ‘E’, CNH, BSI & In-charge, BSI ENVIS RP, Dr. M. Palanisamy, Scientist ‘E’, CNH, BSI, Dr. Devendra Singh, Scientist ‘E’ & HoO, AJC Bose Indian Botanic Garden, Dr. Avishek Bhattacharjee, Scientist ‘C’, CNH, BSI., Dr. Anant Kumar, Bot. Asst., Hqrs., BSI, Dr. Shyam Biswa, Bot. Asst., CNH, BSI, Sri Sudipta Sardar, Bot. Asst. CNH, BSI, Mr. Zeeshan Mazhar, Bot. Asst., CNH, BSI, Ms. Ruma Bhadra, Sr. Preservation Asst., CNH, BSI, Mr. Tanay Shil, Sr. Preservation Asst., CNH, BSI, Ms.Titir Saha, Bot. Asst., AJCBIBG, BSI, Dr. Animesh Maji, Ex-RA, BSI, Dr. Aniket Ghosh, NPDF, SERB Project and Mrs. Ishika Bera, Ex-SRF, BSI.
A total of 76 participants attended the workshop. Thirty-five students of B.Sc. programme and 14 M.Sc. students from Barasat Govt. College, Bethune College, Bidhannagar College, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Government College, Midnapore City College, Newtown, Kaliganj Government College, Nadia, Scottish Church College, Serampore College, The University of Burdwan, University of Calcutta and West Bengal State University were attended the workshop. Two Research Scholars from University of Calcutta and Viswa Bharati University and Associate and Assistant Professors of Basirhat College, Bethune College, Bidhannagar College, Charuchandra College, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Government College, Dr. Kanailal Bhattacharyya College, J.K. College, Mahadevananda Mahavidyalaya, Moulana Azad College, Panihati Mahavidyalaya, Rabindra Mahavidyalaya, Ramsaday College, Shibpur Dinobundhoo Institution College, Sarojini Naidu College for Women, Taki Government College and West Bengal State University also participated in the workshop.
On 6th September, 2022, the workshop started with the welcome address from Dr. Mala Neogy, Associate Professor & Head, Dept. of Botany, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Government College followed Dr. Debasish Banerjee, Principal, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Government College. Dr. K. Karthigeyan and Dr. Avishek Bhattacharjee provided a brief introduction about the workshop during the inaugural session.
After inauguration the technical section started with a lecture on Identification of Flowering Plants of different angiosperm families by Dr. K. Karthigeyan. Dr. A. Bhattacharjee presented a lecture on ‘Typification’. After lunch break the practical sessions was commenced in two batches (37 students and faculty members on each batch) on ‘Plant Identification of Angiosperms’ by Dr. Karthigeyan, Dr. Bhattacharjee, Dr. Anant Kumar, Dr. Shyam Biswa, Sri Sudipta Sardar, Mr. Zeeshan Mazhar, Ms. Ruma Bhadra, and Dr. Animesh Maji, giving special emphasis on the family Acanthaceae, Amaranthaceae, Asteraceae, Cleomaceae, Cyperaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Fabaceae (Leguminosae), Malvaceae, Lamiaceae, Poaceae, Polygonaceae, Rubiaceae, Sapindaceae and Scrophulariaceae. The first day of the workshop ended with a lecture on ‘Different Kinds of names’ by Dr. A. Bhattacharjee. The students and faculty members thoroughly enjoyed the practical and lecture sessions.
On 7th September, 2022, the session started with a lecture on ‘Identification of Fresh Water Algae and Marine Macro Algae’ by Dr. M. Palanisamy followed by another lecture on ‘Identification of Bryophyte’ by Dr. Devendra Singh. After this lecture, the practical sessions of bryophytes was demonstrated by Dr. D. Singh & Ms. Titir Saha. After a small lunch break a practical session on ‘Identification of Marine and Fresh Water Algae’ was demonstrated by Dr. Palanisamy, Dr. A. Maji and Mr. Tanay Shil. After the practical session Mrs. Ishika Bera delivered a lecture on ‘Basic identification & morpho-taxonomy of Macro Fungi’ followed by Dr. Aniket Ghosh on ‘Basic identification & Molecular approaches of Macro Fungi’. Practical sessions was commenced in two batches (37 students and faculty members on each batch) on ‘Identification on Fungi’ by Dr. Ghosh & Mrs. Bera after the lecture.
The students actively interacted with the resource persons during their presentations. The filled-up feedback forms were received from the participants. During the valedictory function Prof. Subha Sankar Sarkar, Vice-Chancellor, Netaji Open University, Dr. Debasish Banerjee, Principal, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Government College, Dr. M. Palanisamy, Scientist ‘E’, CNH, BSI, Dr. K. Karthigeyan, Scientist ‘E’, CNH, BSI & In-charge, BSI ENVIS RP, Dr. Mala Neogy, Head, Dept. of Botany and Dr. Suman Nath, Secretary, Teachers’ Council of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Government College, Newtown awarded the certificates to the participants and faculty members.

Professor, Dept. of Botany, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Government College, Newtown extended their support and facilitated the resource persons to utilise the available facilities for this workshop. Palanisamy, Scientist ‘E’, CNH, BSI, as well as all resource persons and the entire team members of BSI ENVIS Resource Partners for successfully organising the two days workshop. The workshop ended with a formal vote of thanks by Dr. Mala Neogy.
