World Environment Day 2014

Celebration of World Environment Day June 5, 2014

 

Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden (AJCBIBG), Howrah is one of the oldest and largest botanic gardens in South-East Asia having around 1400 plant species of economical  as well as conservational value. Located on the west bank of river Hooghly, this garden with its 275 acres of land provides excellent edaphic condition for ex-situ conservation of Rare, Endangered and Endemic species. This garden is also playing significant role in public and educational awareness. Every year various programmes are being organized for different walk of society ranging from students to a nature lovers. The World Environment Day is celebrated every year on 5th June at AJCBIBG and on this occasion different types of competitions are conducted for school students.

           This year also the World Environment Day (WED) was celebrated on 5th June 2014. On the occasion of WED, different competitions like Sit & Draw, Debate and Quiz were organized on holidays in the month of May 2014 for different age groups of school students, which was participated by approximately 500 students not only from Howrah, Hooghly, Kolkata schools, but also from far flung districts of Midnapur and Purulia. The theme of these competitions was set as per the environment related current topics and students were given maximum opportunity to establish themselves with their power of imagination and self confidence. Successful participants were awarded with medals and certificates on World Environment Day function held at AJCBIBG on 5th June.

On this WED function, Sri Subhanjan Das, District Magistrate, Howrah was present as the Chief Guest and Prof. A.K. Ray Director, IIEST, Shibpur graced the occasion as the Guest of Honour.

On this day, about 300 saplings of economic and medicinal importance were distributed to the visitors.

A short cultural programme was arranged on this occasion, which was performed by the research scholars of Botanical Survey of India, Howrah/Kolkata and a dance troop of Howrah district. The programme concluded with the planting of saplings by the distinguished guests.
