A Checklist of Plants of Tripura
TRIPURA
Geographically Tripura state is situated in the eastern part of India bordered by Bangladesh to the west, south and north, by Assam to the north east and by Mizoram to the east. The state lies between 22Ëš56´ and 24Ëš32´ N and 91Ëš10´ and 92Ëš21´ E covering an area of 10477 sq. km. Tripura a former Princely state, was integrated with India on 15th October 1949 as a part of ‘C’ state and subsequently given the status of full fledged state in January 1972. It has 3 districts, 10 subdivisions 45 tahsils and 3636 villages. There are 19 tribal communities comprising 29% of the state’s population. Tripura, Chakma, Reang, Halam, Jamatia, Mog, Noatia, Garo and Lushai are some of the prominent tribal communities. Physiographically, the state is divided into 3 distinct zone, viz., Hill ranges, undulating high lands of narrow and broken plateau and low lands and river beds. The climate of this state is characterised by moderate temperatures and a highly humid atmosphere. The soil of this state are broadly classified into two categories, namely (1) soils of the high land and (2) soils of the low land. Based on climate (also altitude and longitude) the forests of Tripura are treated under tropical forest types. They are grouped and described as:

b) Moist deciduous mixed forest
B. Seral tye
3. Swamp vegetation
C. Subsidiary edaphic types
4. Bamboo forest
5. Cane brakes
6. Garjan forest
7. Savannah
8. Grassland vegetation
An account of 1573 taxa comprising 1545 species and 28 extratypical varieties in 862 genera and 193 families of vascular plants are given in the present list.
